Blindness by Jose' Saramago
For some unknown reason a city is plunged into a white blindness. The government not sure what has happened or what to do orders all those stricken to be quarantined in an abandoned mental hospital. Here the strong rule and the weak perish. This is also where humanity breaks down. But all is not lost, there is one person, a doctor, who has not lost her sight and she will lead a small group through the city to safety.
This is a disturbing story to say the least but I found the way Saramago described the total collapse of humanity and compassion the most disturbing. This is not an easy book to read and at times the way it is written can be a little confusing but stick with it. It's worth the time.
